Energy Company Pays to Offset Carbon

Posted: 08 November 2021

Just like you, trees need to breathe. You’ve probably heard that trees make the oxygen that humans breathe. Did you also know that humans make the carbon dioxide that trees breathe?

Not only do trees breathe in carbon dioxide, they can also store it. This is very important and is one of the ways that humans and nature used to live in harmony. Unfortunately, humans have been producing more carbon dioxide than the earth can store.

Some countries, including the United States, have introduced a system where companies can pay money to offset the carbon dioxide they produce. They pay a certain amount of money for a certain amount of stored carbon. This is called a carbon credit.

In Michigan, an energy company has partnered with a government department to buy carbon credits worth $10 million over the next ten years. This money will be invested into a very big forest, called the Pigeon River Country state forest.

But not everyone is convinced that this project is good news. Some people are worried that by buying carbon credits companies might do less to lower their impact on the environment.

Carbon credits might not be the solution to the climate crisis, but they definitely help!
